MINORITY ACCESS TO RESEARCH CAREERS PROGRAM (MARC)
NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH
2-YEAR STIPEND OPPORTUNITY
Dear Potential MARC Scholar:
I believe that you are a student who would benefit considerably from research experience since you may have aspirations to earn a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences, and to pursue a research career. I am, therefore, inviting you to apply for a position in the new MARC Fellows Program.
UCSD has just been awarded a substantial grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help attract, train, prepare, and financially support highly qualified underrepresented minority (URM) undergraduate students in the biosciences for entry into health-related research careers in academics or private industry.
The program begins this summer with a stipend-supported, 8-week faculty mentored research experience at UCSD followed by an ongoing program in 2009-2010, a second paid research experience next summer at a different university, and stipend support throughout the 2010-11 academic year. This summer’s experience will involve an immersive, full-time research activity from June 22 – August 14 during which you will be expected to contribute to the success of an on-going research project. Additionally, you will complete a condensed GRE (Graduate Record Exam) preparatory course, attend seminars on research methods, and author a research paper. At the conclusion of the summer program, you’ll present your findings at the annual UCSD Summer Research Conference.
To qualify you must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, express an interest in scientific research, and have at least 90 unit of credit.
$922.00 per month for 24 months;
$8,863/year for tuition & fees, including summer;
Student health insurance, if needed;
$3000 to support living costs during second summer program at another university;
$500 travel costs for second summer to research program.
If you are interested, please let me know as soon as possible by responding to this email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or contacting me at (858) 534-9754 and I will be in touch with further information.
